Nursing “Homes”: Gets Me Every Time

An Alzheimer’s blog recently posted an article called “5 Things to Remember when Moving a Loved One to a Nursing Home“.  The five things are access to the following services:

  • Beautician
  • Podiatrist
  • Eye Glasses
  • Hearing Aids
  • Dental Services

All of those things are important. There is no debate. But every time I read or hear the phrase “nursing home,” I have the same reaction – there ain’t no such thing, in our society. We all know what a home is, right? Does it look like this?

Nursing "Home"?

Nursing “Home”?

Are there better and worse skilled nursing facilities and memory care units? Absolutely. Are they appropriate for some patients, given that our health care system pretty much ignores helping with the costs of a better solution – aging in place and nursing (clinical and non-clinical) in the home? Yes. Can they be confused with anyone’s home? Not so much.

Let’s stop using that phrase, until we can actually create a “nursing home” that actually is!

Best wishes. Bert
